Best Places to Buy Coffee Beans

They may only have one or two locations, or just a PO Box or website, but these smaller, specialty coffee roasters do a fantastic job. Of course, some have grown to the point where they're not so small anymore, but they still take great pride in the quality of their beans. We've come across quite a few good sources for coffee beans, but if you know of a roaster or coffee bean supplier in your area or on the web that you don't see here, please tell us about them so we can add their link to this section.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters
http://www.stumptowncoffee.com/

With 3 locations in the Portland, Oregon area, Stumptown is one of our personal favorite craft roasters. Try the Hair Bender blend, it's rich, smooth and complex. We've heard that Stumptown uses the Hair Bender as their standard house default coffee, so you know it has to be good.

Santa Barbara Roasting Companyh
http://www.sbroco.com/

Onsite roasting and blending just a mile or two from the beach on State Street in sunny Santa Barbara, California. One of our favorite spots to hang out in SB. Be sure to try the Montecito Blend, one of the best coffees we've had in quite a while.

La Reina Coffee
http://www.lareinacoffee.com

La Reina Coffee Farm is located on two luscious acres in the oldest coffee farming community on the Big Island - Holualoa, Hawaii. Cindy's website may still in development but her coffee is outstanding.

They travel the globe to find the finest coffees, batch roast them to peak flavor, and vacuum package them fresh. If you order your beans ground, be sure to select their "Infusion" grind which is ideal for a French Press. Or better yet, get whole bean and grind it yourself.

PTs Coffee Co.
http://www.ptscoffee.com

Founded by Jeff Taylor and Fred Polzin
back in 1993, PT’s Coffee Roasting Co. is one of the first micro-roasters in Kansas.
They have the passion and patience to meticulously roast their coffee in small batches to lock in the natural aromas and flavors. In addition to the 21 freshly roasted single origin coffees, PT’s Coffee Roasting Co. roasts a number of Signature Blends, Fair Trade Coffees and Certified Organic coffees.

Turtle Creek Coffee
http://www.turtlecreekcoffee.com

Mick Carnet, Roast Master and owner of Turtle Creek in Columbia, South Carolina, takes coffee roasting very seriously. As an "Artisan Micro-Roaster," Mick is the guy loading the green beans by hand into his two Ambex roasters and carefully watching over the process. The end result is some of the best coffee we've tasted yet. You've got to try the Daterra Bourbon Collection.

Mountain Thunder Kona Coffee
http://www.mountainthunder.com

Way up high at 3200 feet on the slopes of Hualalai Mountain on the Big Island of Hawaii, Mountain Thunder produces rich, bold 100% Kona. They've even been featured on the Food Network and the Discovery Channel. We were lucky enough to get some from a coworker who recently took a vacation trip to Hawaii.

Copper Door Coffee
http://www.copperdoorcoffee.com

An Internet-only artisan roaster based in Denver, Colorado, Sinjin Eberle began roasting coffee 20 years ago in his college kitchen. Today, he carefully roasts his coffees to perfection in very small 8 pound batches using handmade, all American equipment.

http://www.peets.com/

Since 1966, Peet's has been roasting coffee from their headquarters in Berkeley, California for coffee lovers all over the West Coast. Best known for their dark roasts and the famous Major Dickason's Blend, Peets prides itself on roasting and shipping the same day for online orders.

Diedrich Coffee
http://www.diedrich.com/

Based right here in Orange County, California (just down the road from us), Diedrich roasts up some excellent beans on a regular basis. They've been doing it since 1916, so I guess they know a thing or two about coffee. Our personal favorite is the Nepenthe Blend, a dark and complex variety.

The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf
http://coffeebean.com/index.aspx

Founded in 1963, the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf offers 27 varieties of coffee and 30 varieties of tea. We'd classify them as one of the bigger guys, but they do offer quite a few beans to choose from and their stores are located all over the place.

Tully's Coffee
http://www.tullys.com/

Located right in Starbucks' backyard, Tully's has a much smaller offering of coffees but we've found them to be pretty good. They've expanded into the grocery channel, so you might find their beans on the store shelves if you don't live on the West Coast.

Starbucks Coffee
www.starbucks.com

Yes, they may be found on every street corner, grocery store and airport. But they do offer some decent coffee beans (if you like a "well roasted" coffee). Check out the seasonal specialty offerings and Black Label exclusives. Not a bad place to start your coffee journey and you know you can always find one nearby, no matter where you are.
