Cubicle Coffee: How It All Began
We
didn't set out to be coffee snobs. We just wanted a hot cup of morning
coffee to clear through the fog and fortify us for the day ahead. But
unlike other companies, our present employer did not provide a free and
convenient source of coffee for our floor. There was only one available
option.
The Machine. It stood there quietly in a bank of vending machines in
the lunchroom. Insert a humble quarter and at the press of a button,
a tiny red "poker card" paper cup would drop and fill about
2/3rds full with coffee. Seemed like a pretty good deal for 25 cents.
That is, until we tasted it.
Vile swill was an understatement. The stuff this machine spit out could
strip the grease off your engine. While it was hot and contained some
caffeine, it hardly lifted your spirits. Disappointed to say the least,
we turned to our local Starbucks®.
While
Starbucks did produce a better cup, costs started adding up quickly.
Those Grande nonfat hazelnut double shot lattes were tasty but really
ate into the pocketbook. And by the time the milk, foam and syrups were
added, it hardly resembled coffee. Plus we had to stand in endless lines
and take valuable time away from our pressing projects. We knew there
must be a better way.
